How do you convert a home to solar power?

Converting your home to solar power is a process. It can start and end with having a solar system installed and "plugged in" (a process in itself), but it's usually best to start the conversion with some simple lifestyle changes and energy efficiency upgrades. This does not mean you have to fully renovate your home, but upgrading to energy efficient light bulbs, a programmable thermostat, insulation or perhaps new windows are substantial improvements that can be made relatively cheaply. Of course, turning the lights off when you leave a room, making sure windows are shut (or open) at night and other small lifestyle adjustments are also key. Any way you can improve your home's energy efficiency is a good step toward a solar home conversion.

Then it's in the hands of you and your solar contractor. They'll assess your home, its location, your roof, your energy consumption and the other factors involved in sizing and installing a solar power system. Most contractors will also help you dissect and understand tax rebates and incentives, which is typically necessary before they can give you an accurate estimate. Interconnection agreements with your utility (for grid-tie systems) will also be necessary.

The first step in converting your home to solar power is simply asking or thinking about how you can do it. Often, homeowners have already taken steps to improve energy efficiency. It all really starts by consulting with a local solar installer or consultant. Because solar power conversion is a process, it is at least subtly different for every home. Here is what some folks have said about CalFinder Contractors:

Sun-tricity was very helpful with the entire solar process. I live in San Diego and got my solar panels from them and it's only been a month but my electricity bill is only $5.35 this month! Seriously! They took care of everything from the rebates to the city permiting. I highly recommend this company, they seem to genuinely believe in the whole green initiative, and even planted a tree in my yard after the panels were installed. Ask for Richard 619-894-5042.

California Construction Center is a wonderful company. These guys are truly concerned with the happiness and satisfaction of the homeowner. The foreman was always asking me if I was happy with the work. If I wanted any changes made, they were taken care of right away. There was always someone available to take my calls, and if I did have to leave a message, I would get a call back in minutes. All unforeseen work that wasn’t incorporated into the original bid was addressed with out them asking for more money. I am sincerely very happy with them and the work. These guys seem to be the only company that tells the truth. They were upfront about every aspect of the project. Everything that was on the contract was done. They genuinely care about the customer.
