How expensive is solar power?

Left to its own devices, solar power is today still too expensive for most homeowners. However, our growing need for fast, reliable and clean energy sources has inspired governments around the world to step in and offer incentives to cover a portion of those costs and to spur innovation that will bring those costs down.
On average, home solar power costs $8-10 per watt installed, though that price is dropping consistently and does not take incentives into account. The truth is that the price of solar is difficult to generalize. In one state, a homeowner may be able to get more than half of their solar power system paid for by utility, state and federal rebates or tax incentives. In another state, however, a homeowner may be left on their own, save for federal tax incentives which apply to everyone.
Most home solar power systems end up costing between $20,000 and $40,000 before incentives, providing a significant portion of the home's electrical needs. That will look expensive to the vast majority of us, but bear in mind two things: One, federal incentives will shave 30 percent off your total at tax time, and two, once the solar power panels are installed, they will start saving a lot of money on your electric bills. In other words, they immediately start working off that initial cost.
