Nationwide Home Solar Power Contractors and Information
The cost of solar power varies by location, due primarily to the availability of tax incentives and rebates from utilities and state and local governments. But incentives are just one factor that ultimately affect both initial (pre-rebate) and end costs (post-rebate). Solar power costs have been dropping steadily for the last 10 years and are expected to continue that trend into the future.
Determining how much it would cost to solar power your house begins first with determining how much energy your house (i.e. your household) consumes. Here is a simplified example: A typical home might use roughly 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month. Breaking that down incrementally, we see that the home requires about 34 kWh per day. Assume the house (at least the roof) receives an average of 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. We divide that 34 kWh by five to find out how much electricity the solar power system must create daily to adequately power the house. In this case, it is 6.8 kilowatts (6,800 watts), which we'll round up to 7 to be on the safe side, although it would likely be a bit more if we factor in inverter efficiency.
The average price for home solar power (including installation) is about $7-9 per watt. Sticking with the number seven, you can estimate that a 7-kW solar power system will cost about $49,000 before incentives. To take the home off the grid, the expense of a battery bank would also have to be factored in. The federal government will pay 30% of total costs on systems installed by 2016. That reduces the cost to just over $34,000. State or local incentives, if available, will bring that cost down even more. Also remember that the first and often best step to reducing the cost of solar powering a home is to increase energy efficiency and decrease energy usage. The United States consumes energy like no other country on earth and an energy-conscious homeowner can usually get their home well below that 1,000 kWh/month average.
