How Safe Is Solar Energy?
| Posted on May 13th in Going Solar by Dan.
As counties and communities across the country adjust to the solar energy movement, a lot of questions concerning safety have arisen. Many of these are valid, if easily resolvable, concerns. Just as there is very little maintenance on solar panels, likewise there is very little safety concern provided that the system was professionally installed.
For ground mount and rooftop systems, wind resistance is a key factor in solar panel installation. Wind uplift is certainly a safety concern and a big reason why homeowners are not recommended to install their own solar system. An experienced, qualified contractor should know the wind risks for your location and exactly how to counterbalance them through proper and sturdy installation.
Because solar panels are usually installed away from trees or other unwanted shaders, objects falling on and shattering or dislodging the panels is not of much concern. If trees, bushes, etc. begin to rise above your solar panels, then have them trimmed.
Solar panels, combined with their mounting system, are quite heavy and are very dangerous, just like any other weighty object, falling or flying off a roof or toppling over in a yard. This is why professional installation is worth reiterating. And not only for safety concerns, but solar panel installation is also a very technical process and requires some esoteric know-how.
If your system is properly installed, and you can keep the kids from throwing rocks at them, then you have very little to worry about. So enjoy your homemade electricity.
