New York’s New Solar Empowerment Policy

new york cityWe’ve focused in great length lately on the city of San Francisco and their progressive approach to achieving an energy independent city in the future. However, there are many more areas within our country who are also aggressively addressing the issue. New York City is another city that is fully engrossed in seeking innovative new ways to make solar power affordable and attractive for its residents and businesses.

Just this past month, the New York City Infrastructure Taskforce held a public forum to discuss what roadblocks are standing in the way of advancing New York City towards more alterative energy sources. The combination of academic, engineering, and business experts formulated the idea for the Solar Empowerment Zone. While still in the infancy stages of development, the policy would target specific areas of the city that are in need of or the most conducive to solar energy systems, and offer a large amount of incentives to residents and businesses to invest in the systems. “Realization of the concept would establish, irrefutably, the Big Apple’s leadership position on the national stage in renewable energy adoption and innovative policy making” SOLARONE Green Energy Arts & Education Center.New York City is already a part of the Solar America Cities Partnership, and the addition of this policy will only expedite their solar achievement goals. I’m sure you’ve noticed by now the recurrent theme running through both this story and the others we’ve profiled; making solar more affordable directly correlates to more energy independence. Solar energy is definitely one of the most clean and effective alternatives to fossil fuels, and it only makes sense to continue to advance this technology. The bottom line is- if Americans can afford it, they are more than willing to switch to alternative energy.
