Should your Solar System Operate On- or Off-Grid?

Prior to addressing this question, it’s important to recognize the difference between grid-tied and off-grid solar operating systems. Grid-tied homes are connected to power lines operated by the utility company, while off-grid homes rely solely on a renewable energy system and batteries.

Most homeowners go with the standard, grid-tied solar energy system. One reason is security. Being connected to the grid means you will always have an unlimited energy supply at your fingertips. Batteries used in off-grid systems can only store so much energy, and the off-grid systems can be less reliable during temperature extremes and periods with extended cloud cover.

Other advantages to being on the grid include zero maintenance, low monthly payments to maintain the connection, and smaller up-front costs. Connecting the system to the grid is a basic installation requirement. Grid-tied homes can also take advantage of net metering, or generating credits when energy production exceeds use.

Homeowners who select to be off the grid include those who live in remote areas located far away from power lines. Homeowners who invest in the higher up-front costs of a standalone system garner a sense of independence in being self-sufficient. It is also gratifying to lose reliance on conventional electricity generated by burning coal and natural gas. In addition, anyone who’s experienced a power outage knows that the grid is not always reliable.

Off-grid system owners must keep in mind that battery life is shorter than the life of most solar panels. Battery replacement and maintenance is a big consideration, especially since they contain toxic elements.Of course, homes connected to the grid can use back-up batteries as well. These are the most expensive systems to install, but they give access to the best of both worlds. Homeowners with grid and battery connection have power available when the grid fails and don’t need to rely on a limited battery. These homeowners can switch to grid-supplied power only as a last resort. They can also choose to be gentle on batteries to extend their life, or to use them more heavily for a lower electricity bill.
