Beneath Roswell: What We Know To Be There and How Solar Will Help Find It

Roswell, New Mexico: The town that brought you the modern UFO conspiracy. A town that will never escape its haunting stigma as Alien Central USA. To this day a large, mysterious military base sits underground outside of Roswell. The theories as to what goes on down there are as staggering as they are unbelievable. Yet mum’s the word from our government, and the conspiracies live on.

As it turns out, however, something else lives underground in Roswell: a veritable sea of brackish, or slightly salty, water. That water, and its potential drinkability, is bringing solar power to Roswell.

Roswell and the state of New Mexico have granted solar manufacturer, Sustainable Resources Inc. (SRI), a 1-year lease and over $450,000 to test and implement their equipment in the area. SRI makes solar pumps as part of the desalinization of brackish and salt water. While much of New Mexico sits atop this salty sort of sea as well (and who knows what else!?), Roswell is ideal for SRI’s plant because there sits the former Roswell National Desalinization Test Facility.

The solar-powered pumps filter salt water by channeling it through membranes that remove salt and pollutants. SRI is at this time studying the former test facility to learn how to best use it. They hope the plant will be up and running by the end of the year.
