Born-Again Solar? India to Install Solar Energy on Religious Shrines

In an effort to illustrate the benefits of solar and renewable energy, the Union Government of India will set up solar energy systems on several religious shrines. Following the inauguration of a new semiconductor manufacturing plant in Hyderabad in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India’s New and Renewable Energy Minister announced funding for systems at three famous shrines.
The installations aim to spread the word about renewable resources and “promote the use of solar energy among the masses.” In addition to setting up systems at various shines, the government will also give each Indian state 10 million rupees (about $210,000) to build solar energy systems on their Raj Bhavan, or the official residence of governors in each state. More funds are expected in the future for solar systems on various government buildings as well.
