From around the Web, Solar around the World

Solar energy is a growing commodity in the U.S., but what about the rest of the world? Since viable energy sources are a global necessity, solar power is gaining ground, abroad as well as on American soil. Here are just a few examples taken from web-based news snippets.

  • Africa has an abundance of sunlight, but lacks in electricity, and solar energy may be just the solution. Radio Netherlands reports that off-grid residents of KwaZulu Natal are already benefiting from solar, with the help of the Department of Minerals and Energy and the Foundation of Rural Energy Services (FRES). For a small monthly fee, customers who have depended on candlelight in the evening now have access to television and radio. FRES plans to expand its solar home systems to over a million people before decade’s end.
  • According to Renewable Energy Access, the French government is pushing solar, with plans to increase PV capacity from 32.7 MW to 3,000 MW by 2020. In addition, 5 million solar thermal units are to be installed in buildings by 2020./li>
  • Japan’s Eurus Energy group, known for harvesting wind energy, is now part of the PV power generation field. The company’s first project consists of a 1 MW PV power station in Korea. Commercial operation will start in June 2008.
  • The biggest solar powered, private roof in Switzerland is set to be fully operational in 2009. The roof will be that of SES Solar Inc.’s new manufacturing facility, which will be rated 567 kW for a 550,000 kWh production.
