Help Redesign the BP Logo, Show the Corporation’s True Colors
The tragic Deepwater Horizon offshore oil rig explosion and the unstoppable oil leak has embarrassed BP to no end. Unfortunately, when we get embarrassed, we turn red, but when an oil company gets embarrassed, an entire gulf and its inhabitants turn black. To solidify BP’s embarrassment and help re-brand the company as the fossil-fueler and polluter that it is, Greenpeace in the UK is asking people to help redesign the BP Logo. It will also serve to re-brand the company by contrasting the eco-friendly-looking, “Beyond Petroleum” sunflower it touts on signs and advertisements.
The competition began as a protest of BP’s involvement in the Alberta Tar Sands in Canada, which are literally razing the environment in parts of Canada, but has really taken off in response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill — now the largest in US history.
The Behind the Logo competition has three categories: one for professional designers and design students, one for the general public and another for contestants under 18 years of age. Each category will have a winner, and an overall winner will be selected by a panel of Greenpeace judges. That winning logo will then become the face of the Greenpeace campaign to stop BP from harvesting oil from Canadian tar sands.
As the organizers put it:
“We’re after the best ideas and concept, not necessarily the slickest logo. So if you’re not a professional designer, don’t worry. If you’re the overall winner, we’re offering you a day with a top graphic designer to transform your idea into a final product.”
So get your paintbrushes, pencils or Photoshop skills ready on the double. We’ve only got until June 28th to enter!
