Jack Johnson, Cake to Release 100 Percent Solar-Made Albums

Jack Johnson is a well-known musician and environmentalist. His charm, endearing wisp of a voice, barefoot mentality and tireless environmental activism continue to inspire youth to clean up our beaches and protect our oceans. Johnson’s eye toward sustainability is growing a bit wider as he and his band work hard in Hawaii on his sixth studio album.

The Mango Tree, his personal eco-friendly studio in Hawaii, will rely 100 percent on solar power to record the new album set to be released on Brushfire Records by June 16th, just prior to kicking off a month-long world tour. Johnson will also appear in Honolulu on April 23-24, Earth Day weekend, for his annual Kokua Festival performing alongside Ziggy Marley, Taj Mahal and a host of local Hawaiian acts.

Sacramento-based Cake is also recording their sixth album, and they too are using 100-percent solar power to do it. One of Billboard Magazine’s 10 Greenest Bands (along with Jack Johnson), Cake has a history of eco-friendliness. Everything from writing to rehearsing to recording will be done with solar electricity. And for Cake, their solar power system actually brings in a bit of cash. Excess energy created by the system is sold to Sacramento Public Works, for which the band receives a small check at the end of every month. Cake may be producing the first “net-negative” album to date.

Cake’s solar power system was installed by Borrego Solar.
