Celebrities Going Solar, Do Their Words Match Their Lifestyles?

al gore environmentSince leaving office, Al Gore has made it his mission to bring greater awareness to global warming. Although he won great acclaim for his movie, “An Inconvenient Truth,” Mr. Gore’s personal practices have drawn criticism. Many celebrities have jumped on board with Al Gore’s movement toward a more energy efficient country, but are they following through in their personal lives?

Much of the criticism directed towards Al Gore was because of the high amount of electricity and natural gas consumed each year by his 10,000 square foot Tennessee home. In his defense, however, Mr. Gore did install solar energy, purchase green power to offset the additional energy required, and invest in carbon offset projects. He also drives a hybrid SUV and uses CFLs.

Ed Begley Jr is another celebrity that has led the way in the green movement. Known for his passion on the issue, even riding to work on a bicycle, Ed has a completely self-sufficient home with a full solar energy system. He is also starring in an HGTV series, “Living with Ed,” that focuses on eco-friendly living.

Ed Begley Jr. and Al Gore are not alone in their quest. The celebrity list of those who at least have solar powered homes in long: Leonardo DiCaprio, Alanis Morisette, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Cate Blanchette just to name a few. Wouldn’t it make sense that James Bond would be involved as well? Pierce Brosnan is quite active in the green movement, and also has solar energy in his home.

As this article, How Celebrities Live Green illustrates, celebrities are definitely “walking the walk” as well as “talking the talk.” They have taken this cause on as one dear to them, and have done much to further the movement and to raise awareness.
