Florida Programs Bring Solar to Underserved Communities

florida solarFlorida, the sunshine state and one of the most popular states in the Union, is rapidly growing. If you are amongst the many that love this tropical state and are considering a move there, you may be interested to learn more about the solar programs offered there.Just this past June, Florida’s major utility, Florida Power and Light Company (FPL) announced plans to add 110 megawatts of new solar energy capacity to the state’s power grid, making Florida number two in the nation for solar production. In addition to various state, federal, and county incentives, Florida has also gotten on board with the Dream Reborn and Solar Richmond initiatives.Dream Reborn and Solar RichmondThe Dream Reborn campaign was founded in the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and is focused on eliminating environmental racism, namely providing the same green and solar initiatives to low-income communities as the more up-scale neighborhoods. An off-take of this movement, Solar Richmond is also committed to creating green jobs and training for African-American youth to encourage them into the fields of solar and green technologies. The hope is to further the movement of cleaning up lower income neighborhoods, providing a green, clean environment for everyone.Front Porch Sunshine ProgramIn response to these movements, Florida has taken the lead in providing solar energy technology in low-income homes. Florida recently created the “Front Porch Sunshine Program,” which is an initiative that will supply over 150 solar water heaters to 20 underserved communities throughout the state. Another new program, SunBuilt, provides rebate incentives to builders who incorporate solar hot water heaters in new homes.Solar and clean energy should not be only for those who can afford it; everyone should benefit from a cleaner earth.
