Psychedelic SunBoxes Trip the Light Fantastic
Solar power has a new gig. Composer Craig Colorusso of Boston has created SunBoxes; individual speaker boxes powered by solar panels. Each SunBox is embedded with an individual guitar sample and, when all 20 SunBoxes are set up in the sunlight, an ambient, psychedelic, aurally-pleasing, solar-powered symphony results.

Each guitar sample is unique and all are different lengths, creating an ever-evolving sound that is different for each listener. SunBoxes are not just environmentally-friendly, they are an “environment to enter.” To illustrate, or rather, orchestrate that cosmic claim, Colorusso and his SunBoxes will (weather permitting) put on a concert Saturday, May 8 at the Important Records compound in Massachusetts.
“Participants are encouraged to walk amongst the speakers,” says ImportantRecords.com. “It sounds different inside of the array. There is a different sense of space inside. Certain speakers will be closer and louder therefore the piece will sound different to different people in different positions throughout the array. Creating a unique experience for everyone.”

Even more fascinating is the way the rise and fall of the sun affects the show. SunBoxes contain no batteries, everything is run on pure solar energy, so the concert begins at dawn and ends when the sun goes down. Plus the sound of the music changes depending on the sun’s position in the sky, making visitors aware of how the day cycles.

Interesting. It looks like some of the panels are monocrystalline and some are polycrystalline. I wonder why the need for two different types?
