Solar Treks the Globe
As the world turns, so solar spreads, making news all across the globe. We all know how fast it’s growing the U.S., but we often miss out on solar’s trek around the world. Here are some recent solar headlines:
- Early this year, Renee posted an article very similar to this one. In that piece she mentioned Japan’s Eurus Energy, a prominent wind power firm that was branching into PV with their first solar plant in South Korea. That 1 MW plant is now up and running. You can read the press release here.
- It’s hard to ignore Q-Cells, the German company that this year surpassed Sharp Solar as the world’s largest solar manufacturer. Involved in silicon processing, thin-film and PV manufacturing, Q-cells is constantly making news.
- Solar-aid plays a big role in bringing solar power to the developing world, most notably rural Africa. Through unique fundraising, the organization is solar-powering education, health, and welfare where it’s needed most.
- Solar Energy is not only a source of electricity; it is also a source for jobs. In a recent joint report, four international organizations predicted 6.3 million new green-collar jobs by 2030 in the solar industry alone.
- According to Renewable Energy World, researchers in Freiburg, Germany have achieved 39.7% efficiency in solar cells used in concentrated PV applications. These high efficiency, multi-junction cells comprise yet another step toward higher quality, cheaper solar installations.
No matter how you slice it – whether it’s new innovations, higher efficiencies, or new jobs – the solar industry is picking up momentum on its trek around the globe.
