What’s New in Solar? Larger Arrays, Better Practices, and Cheaper Production

What’s the news in solar this week? Surprise, surprise, the industry is growing, becoming more accommodating, and continuing to discover creative ways to harvest the sun’s renewable energy to generate clean electricity. Here’s the latest on how.

Larger Arrays

UniRac just announced a new series of PV mount solutions, the Double Row PV PoleTop. The new product line will accommodate larger arrays in higher, category C winds of 110 mph. The pole top has a variable tilt angle and is quick to install. Other new mounting solutions by UniRac include FastFoot, an attachment option for membrane roofs, and Conduit Strap, which snaps modules onto mounting structures without the need for tools.

Better Practices

Solar Electric Power AssociationThe Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA) just released a new report on utility practices related to residential PV installations. “Residential Photovoltaic Metering & Interconnection Study: Utility Perspectives and Practices” draws from a national survey with 63 U.S. utilities and is intended to develop practices for more practical and profitable solar solutions. This includes suggesting ways to reduce costs in time and resources, and deploying advanced metering infrastructure and data management changes.

Cheaper Production

A new study by Finnish scientists unveils how manufacturing nanostructured dye solar cells (DSCs) can be even simpler. The proposed method involves using flexible stainless steel sheets as opposed to glass sheets, which currently account for 30 percent of material costs.
