BioSolar, Creating Eco-friendly Products for Eco-friendly Results

biosolar.jpgHarnessing the power of the sun’s heat and light to enhance our own living seems like a very eco-friendly process. What could be more natural and green than using the energy we get for free everyday from that spectacular orb in the sky? But what if we are using products manufactured with plastics (which we obtain through processing petroleum) in order to get that solar power? It seems a complete contradiction; a one step forward and two steps back situation.

In an effort to bring us two steps forward with no back-tracking in sight, BioSolar, Inc. has created a new product that will allow solar power to be acquired through a panel that is made from renewable plant-based materials instead of their petroleum-based counterparts. Their new invention, for which they’ve filed for a global patent, is called BioBacksheet. BioBacksheet is not only manufactured with renewable natural resources making it a green product, it’s also cheaper to produce than traditional solar panels and is extremely effective and durable.

This new innovation will also help to reduce the cost per watt of solar cells, making solar power a more cost effective initiative.

Oddly enough, the scientist who leads the creative process is Dr. Stanley B. Levy, who was formerly employed for numerous years at Dupont, working with materials like Teflon, Mylar, and Kapton – products used in the production of the petroleum-based solar cells that BioBacksheet is now competing against. I guess Levy realized that as the world caught on to the idea of greening the planet, they would eventually catch on to the fact that the products we count on to accomplish that goal should be eco-friendly as well.

Levy’s new innovation will definitely help us reach the goals we have to reduce (and eventually eliminate) our dependency on petroleum. Hopefully, it will also spur our nation’s businesses to realize that it’s not okay to simply market products to the public and call them green; they need to present us with products that truly do have a clear benefit to our lives and the planet simultaneously.
