Prototypical Solar
Trying to keep up on solar innovation is like a cowboy trying to rob a bullet train. Everyday the web is abuzz with breaking solar news. The fact is, I think, that a lot of the solar start-ups that took form in the last few years are starting to put all the pieces together, starting to make their ideas into concrete realities. Here are some of the latest realities in solar innovations:
- Morgan Solar has managed to decrease the size and cost of a solar system while increasing efficiency by using their patented optical concentrating technology.
- Soldius has made the pocket-sized solar charger universal. For just $15 you can charge your iPod, Blackberry, and most major-brand phones. The Soldius 1 even comes with a USB adapter.
- I’ve touched on Promethean Power, and their solar powered refrigerator, in the past. Of course now they are attracting even more attention…and money.
- A PanelClaw makes a Polar Bear. That’s right. Solar mounting systems manufacturer, PanelClaw, has developed their Polar Bear system, which slices and dices installation time. They claim three workers can install 16 panels in under 20 minutes. Now that’s something.
- Solyndra has taken solar panel modules cylindrical. Designed to take advantage of abundant, commercial rooftop space, the panels consist of several solar cylinders that can take advantage of direct, diffuse, and reflected light.
