Solar Comes In All Sizes; This Week’s Solar Links

From corporate giants to itty-bitty birds, solar has a knack for being everywhere at once. Hmm … I suppose we should figure as much considering the source of all the power is the source of every bit of life on the planet. This week’s solar link post dabbles in function, flat-out-fancy, and one brilliant if not simple idea.

dow.gifFirst off, we enter the large and looming world of Dow Chemical. This goliath in the chemical field has a giant reputation for making money and polluting the environment (especially for those of us from the company’s home state of Michigan). Now, however, Dow plans to start selling solar shingles within the next few years — a sure sign that the solar industry is looking strong.

birdlight.jpeg Our next stop could be just outside at your balcony where solar-powered, bird-legged glowing globes may be perching at this very moment. These strange but clever avian lights are migrating from Berlin and the sun-swallowed mind of Michael Hilgers.

Finally comes an idea that could revolutionize ghetto blasters the world round. The SunCat solar battery is still a DIY experiment by Knut Karlson. But should he succeed with his crude prototype, these rechargeable batteries wrapped in solar cells could have an amazing impact.

One thing is for sure; with all the solar products hitting the market, the web, and the many amazing imaginations out there every day, the home of the future is going to need some extra large windowsills.
