Solar Has the Power to Purify

Access to safe drinking water is a major problem for communities following disasters and energy crises. It’s a problem from the American south to the heart of Africa and beyond. But now, solar power and designer Emilian Dan Cartis may have a solution – the solar-powered water purifier.

Simply dubbed Pure, the water purifier spends its time outside collecting rainwater and making it drinkable. Pure is fairly small, so we’re talking about daily doses here. It can also be used at the beach to desalinate seawater for drinking.

Says the designer’s website, this solar water purifier and rain harvester is “inspired by leaves and processes existent in nature,” including evaporation and condensation. With so much of the world’s population in desperate need of fresh water, designs such as these are vital to global health. Although larger models would better serve the developing world, Pure would make a great addition to any home. It’s a sleek and potentially lifesaving solar safety net.
