Three, Two, One: Solar Gadgets for the New Year


 

Every week or so, we write about new solar gadgets and innovations that are hitting the market. In the past we’ve seen Solar Bees and solar powered bags, among others. Solar gadgets are great first step toward any energy-saving resolutions you might be devising. To help you usher in a greener New Year, here are three new solar products that may make big headlines in 2009:

Solar Wifi really takes the wire out of wireless. From Meraki, these self-powered wireless devices can take solar and Internet access into new realms.

2. Solar Lamp by Sony

Solar Lamp

Sony’s new prototype in solar powered lighting is the first solar lamp to use dye-sensitized solar cells. These cells mimic the process of photosynthesis to produce light. Success for Sony’s prototype could mean a solar gadget revolution in 2009.

The solar air heater presents owners or tenants with free room and space heating. These passive solar devices are amazingly effective, using the natural forces of solar heat and convection. They can be bought new or in kits to be assembled at home. What a great way to warm up the New Year!

    We installed a solar air heater this past November on the south wall of our home.

    Very simple devices, really; significantly less expensive and complex than solar PV panels.

    We’ve written about our experiences with the solar air heater we purchased and installed here on our home blog for anyone interested to learn more about these great products that generate supplemental heat for a home when the sun is out without generating any polluting emmissions or consuming any non-renewable energy resources like natural gas or home heating oil.

    We should come up with easy to install solar powered kits for our home. This is one way of promoting the use of solar power.

    The wifi/mobile repeater idea seems to be taking big in Africa. Here at the moment I need a solar cooler, its Sept and Air Conditioning is going full blast.
