Wind Turbines for the Home

| Posted on July 16th in Solar Products by Anna.

It used to be that propane, natural gas, and diesel were all cheaper methods for heating your home than electricity. However, fuel prices are rapidly rising, and electrical prices aren’t far behind. This leaves many of us pondering what is the best way to cut energy costs. Wind turbines are an intriguing possibility that deserve taking a closer look at.

Wind turbines are used to capture the power produced by the wind and to convert it into usable energy in the form of electricity. By installing a wind turbine, you can potentially reduce your electricity bill by 50-90% each month.

Starck’s New Model

Currently, this process is complicated and expensive, and not necessarily feasible for every homeowner to consider; especially if you live in a city or subdivision. However, just recently, a new mini-turbine was introduced at Milan’s Greenergy Design show. Called the “Democratic Ecology,” this mini-turbine was created by product designer Philippe Starck and is expected to be available to purchase by September of this year. If a legitimate product, this mini-turbine is supposed to only cost around $700, and to provide enough energy to power between 20%-60% of a home. A product such as this has the potential to make wind-power an affordable and attractive alternative power source for every American to consider.

There are already smaller wind turbines already available such as the Modular Architectural Wind Microturbine. This model is small and efficient, mounting unobtrusively onto an existing building, making it more feasible for metro-living.

Wind vs Solar

Before installing any solar equipment such as a wind turbine, be sure to check out what is allowed in your area.
