The U.S. Department of Energy recently doled out over $22 million in solar grants to aid in 24 solar projects. Five of the winning companies – earning a total of $9 million in funding — are stationed in the Bay Area. The money is reserved for solar and even non-solar companies who have technology and processes that are or would be beneficial to the PV industry.
Among the five Bay Area companies awarded funds are:
- Sierra Solar Power – Fremont, $3 million awarded
- Silicon Genesis Corp. – Fremont, $3 million
- XeroCoat – Redwood City, $2.96 million
- Palo Alto Research Center Inc. – $150,000
- Solar Red – San Jose, $150,000
This and other funding, allocated under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, is aimed at reducing manufacturing and product costs for PV equipment. Certain companies are chosen for their potential to have a significant impact on the industry within 2 to 6 years. The other 19 grantees are spread across the nation. For more information on them, see the Department of Energy website.
