How Can Solar Energy Power Computers?
Even though carbon emissions from computers still occupy a very small percentage of global emissions, there has been a big push in recent years for computer operations to “go Green.” In the face of rising consumer advocacy and awareness about climate change, some large computer companies, led by the immense Google corporation, have already pledged to become carbon neutral. Google, among others, plans to offset its carbon emissions through forest restoration and alternative energy sources such as solar power.
In a recent interview, Cambridge University Professor Andy Hopper suggested a very progressive move in turning computer power green. In speaking to The Guardian newspaper, Hopper proposed that large solar or wind farms be used to power network servers. “Computing power can be moved around the world and can be done anywhere in the world where energy is available.” The advantage, according to Hopper, is that we can move computer servers close to solar or wind farms that are in full production. Thus increasing efficiency and lowering costs by harnessing, clean, renewable energy at its source.
That is solar powered computing on a large scale. On a smaller, more personal level there are Portable Solar Power Systems available which you can use to power a variety of items including, but not limited to, your laptop computer. Many of these systems are reasonably priced and easy to assemble and transport.
There are also solar energy options for those who wish to power their home computer. Solar power kits are now manufactured with the ability to power a desktop computer and serve as a backup energy source during power outages. There are even suggestions for building your own solar generator.
Technology in both computers and solar energy is shifting and evolving rapidly. However, one solid projection can be made based on the direction of innovation in both industries: The future is looking green.
