How I Teach (or don’t teach) my Kids about Solar Power

Our children are the hope for the future; the generation that will continue to make advancements in technology to help make this world a cleaner, more sustainable environment. Children need proper guidance and encouragement to be able to develop the needed skills to be able to pursue this direction; and this guidance begins with us as their parents. My son is still a bit too young to fully grasp scientific concepts, but from a fairly young age, you can begin to teach your children just by making it fun and intriguing.Children are very visual; look for illustrations that demonstrate the use of solar energy. This can be through fun cartoons or colorful storybooks. As they grow, incorporate the internet through helpful sites such as: Solar Energy International.Children love one-on-one attention. Look for fun little projects that the two of you can do in evenings and weekends. There are special kits you can purchase to help with these projects. If you already have solar energy on your home, what better way to give them a little lesson in solar energy? Put it in terms they can understand; but show them how the panels work, and how the energy is transferred to the comforts they are accustomed too such as hot water and electricity. Take a field-trip or family vacation and tour a solar-power facility such as Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility in Washington State.Children are literally like sponges; they love to learn, and stimulating and educating them is vital to healthy development. Spend quality time with your children and be sure they are properly equipped with the knowledge they will need to contribute to a more eco-friendly future for our world.
