On SF Mayor Gavin Newsom, Does He Support Or Hinder Solar Growth?

gavin newsomSan Francisco is known for its progressive approach and comprehensive programs to encourage the growth of solar energy within the city. With their growing success, it raises the question; does Mayor Gavin Newsom hinder or support solar growth?

Known as the “green” mayor, it would stand to reason that Gavin Newsom would be enthusiastically promoting and pushing solar energy every chance he gets; so why is he opposed to the San Francisco Clean Energy Act that will be on the ballet this November? The act proposes a plan that would have the city of San Francisco on 100% renewable energy by 2040. With fossil fuel shortages and concerns over greenhouse gas emissions, there shouldn’t be any objection to something as clean-cut as this, right? Obviously not, as there is a major entity aggressively campaigning to block the bill: Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). As is too often the case in politics, Mayor Newsom is caught in the middle between a major powerhouse (literally), and the desires of the people. Not to mention his aspirations for the governorship.

Although not great for appearances, the Mayor’s reluctance may have legitimacy. After all, there is always small print, and a lot that goes on behind the scenes. To his credit, under his management, the city has created a solar task force, he has signed the largest municipal solar incentive program in the nation, and the city has been included in the Solar America Cities Partnership.

So does Mayor Newsom passionately support the advancement of solar energy, or is he just pandering for the support of whoever benefits the advancement of his future? That isn’t a question we can resoundingly answer at the moment; only time can definitively tell. Show your commitment by continuing to pursue solar projects around your home.
