PG&E’s New Solar Plants

sunpower solar plantThere have been increased efforts of late from solar enthusiasts to progress the development of solar energy growth and technology in numerous states and cities. As with many new ideas and progressive movements however, there are always hurdles and opponents blocking advancements. Pacific Gas & Electric Supply, a major energy supplier on the West Coast, has until recently been one of these opponents. That is until just this week, when the company announced plans to construct two new and large photovoltaic plants in California. As described in an August 18th article from Inhabitat, “this development is significant enough that it should encourage a significant uptake in solar power investments.”

The two PG&E plants are projected to produce over 800 megawatts of power, enough energy to supply 239,000 homes. Once completed, these combined facilities will be larger than any other photovoltaic plant in the world and will produce 12 times as much energy as any other. Although not projected to be completed until 2012, it is encouraging to see the plans in motion.

PG&E appears to be recognizing the wave of the future and trying to stay ahead of the curve. Although it looks great in their favor, they are also responding to a State mandated requirement to be producing 20% of their power through renewable energy sources by 2010. Regardless, this shows that where there is a will, there is a way. Obviously, our utility companies have the capability of doing more than they are to support alternative energy programs. Hopefully this is a sign of more progressive programs to come in other areas as well. Request free estimates from solar installers in your area to do what you can within your own home.
