Solar Education in Oakland, CA

In a recent comment, Carl Rose asked for information regarding funding for solar education in Oakland, CA. This is an excellent question as education is vital to promotion and implementation of solar power – not just in Oakland, but all across the world. For now though, let’s see what’s going on in Oakland, the Bay Area, and California as a whole.

Resources vary depending on your angle:

Businesses

For business owners who wish to enter the solar field or train employees to install solar systems, the Go Solar California is probably your best resource. According to the website, online information on training and class schedules is “coming soon.” Scroll down for contact information to find out the details behind funding and/or costs of education.

Teachers and Students

The Rahus Institute focuses on resources for educators who would like to teach students about solar energy. One of these is the Solar Schoolhouse, which has information on education resources and grants for green education.

Pacific Gas and Electric has their Solar Schools Program, which offers grants to schools in the Bay Area. Their goal is not only to educate kids about solar power but also to get solar systems installed on area schools.

The Oakland Green Jobs Corps is an educational resource for Oakland residents with barriers to employment. Students receive training in green-collar jobs, including solar, culminating in paid internships with local green businesses. They also have resources for local teachers.

The Environmental Protection Agency offers resources for teachers and students regarding environmental and renewable energy issues and careers. The EPA also has a history of Environmental Education Grants to several California institutions.

    Dear Sir or Madam:

I’m writing to you on behalf of China’s students; both China and the U.S. are going to enter solar era soon, but China lacks education from website. Your website is a very good base to learn solar subjects, but most Chinese student will feel difficult to understand; I think to have a Chinese version will make learning easier. Google did that and it gained millions of visitors because Chinese enjoy visiting its Chinese version. I’m sure Chinese version of your website can give you raise in attendance.

    Sincerely yours,
    Bob Chen

Several colleges in the bay area offer solar learning courses or related degrees. You can go for anything from an engineering degree to a simple solar installation class. The local electrician’s union may be a place to start. Check out this link to the San Francisco Chronicle which has some listings of education programs (scroll down) in your area…Good Luck and please let us know how it goes!
