Solar Panels in the Fall: Battling Leaves and Debris

The idea that solar panels require no maintenance is a bit of a misconception. Sure, as far as mechanical parts, they have none and therefore require little or no maintenance to keep them producing energy or heating water. There is, however, a certain cleaning regimen that should be followed in order to keep those panels working at maximum potential. Depending on where you live, leaves and other autumnal debris can be an issue for your solar array.

As The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy would say, “Don’t Panic.” For starters, keep trees trimmed a good distance back from the panels to minimize shading and falling leaves. Nonetheless, wind will do what it does, and you will probably have to get the ladder out of the garage once in a while.

Now, the odds are good that your panels are installed on the pitch of your roof or at whatever angle best facilitates solar exposure. So you may not see leaves collecting on the panels. That is good. I would, however, recommend regular, detailed inspection (i.e., with a ladder) anyway. It is also important to protect the mounting system and roof as well. There is the possibility that leaves, which can get waterlogged and heavy, will collect at the upper side of the panels. Get up there and clean these off. They can cause water damage to the panels as well as the roof. Look at is as an extra 15 minutes when you get up to clean your gutters.

Be sure to stay safe! Do not do anything you are uncomfortable with. There are plenty of qualified professionals who will handle panel maintenance. Some solar contractors will include regular maintenance into the original contract. Either note this or ask your contractor about it. If nothing else, they will give you advice on a proper maintenance regimen for your system.
