First Solar is one of the fastest growing manufacturers of solar modules in the world. Their FS Series 2 PV Modules is the latest advancement in solar module technology. They are the largest manufacturer of thin film solar modules with a manufacturing capacity of 735 MW in 2008. Their total expected capacity for 2009 is 1 GW.
Managing the Product Life Cycle
First Solar offers a unique and responsible business proposition. They have developed the first pre-funded module collection and recycling program in the PV industry that includes recycling all components of the module (i.e. glass and encapsulated semiconductor material), to be treated and processed into new modules or other products, thus preventing the modules from becoming solid waste in the environment. They make it incredibly easy for you to return the products for recycling by providing instructions in six different languages and there is no cost for the end user to ship. Ultimately, they manage the product life cycle from raw material sourcing through end of life collection and recycling – leaving a truly, perpetually sustainable cycle that repeatedly reduces hazardous air emissions and solid waste.
Cleaner Solar Technology
Another unique approach to their environmentally clean solar technology is the non-use of perfluorinated gases such as nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) in their thin film solar modules. Atmospheric levels of nitrogen trifluoride, an extremely potent greenhouse gas, are at least four times higher than once thought. Nitrogen fluoride is commonly used during the manufacture of certain thin film solar cells. First Solar’s objective is providing sustainable energy solutions that decrease the environmental impacts of energy production on a life cycle basis.
