Why Is Puget Sound’s Energy Policy Ranked So Well?
Puget Sound, located in the rainy and cold northwest in the state of Washington, probably wouldn’t be your first guess as a prime location for solar energy. However the utility company, Puget Sound Energy, is a national leader in solar energy policy. Surprisingly, “According to rankings released by the Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA) today, PSE merits a “Top 10 Solar Ranking” among all utilities across the country.” Solar Energy News, July 24, 2008.
Puget Sound Energy’s success can be attributed to their progressive, all-inclusive program. They built the Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility, which converts sunlight into enough solar energy to service 300 homes. Their program goes beyond just generating solar energy for homes. They have already provided several grants to bring solar power to classrooms. They also provide incentives to their customers by allowing those with solar systems to store any extra energy they generate with the utility for future use when they exceed their capacity and have to draw on the public system. In addition, PSE is working in collaboration with Washington State’s solar incentive program, offering their customers discounts based upon usage.
So why is a relatively small utility so advanced in their operations? They recognize the wave of the future, along with planning for the desires of their demographics. They realize the area’s growing population of retirees; many of whom are quite interested in alternative energy. To reinforce the success of their progressive foresight, over 8,000 visitors have already toured Wild Horse just since it opened to the public in April 2008.
This remarkable example of a successful alternative energy program just further demonstrates the desires of the American people for more energy options. Hopefully, those setting examples such as PSE will be beacons for more to follow their lead. Do your part by taking whatever steps are possible in your area.
