Solar ventilation fans serve the same purpose as solar gable fans or solar attic fans; in fact, the terms are often used interchangeably. For our purposes, the solar ventilation fan simply has a wider variety of applications. They often mount on the rooftop of the home in order to draw air up and out of the attic. The main advantage in rooftop placement is that the fan is at a higher location in the attic, ensuring that as little warm air as possible can be trapped beneath the peak of the roof.
Solar ventilation fans are also quite popular in boats, RVs, mobile homes, and other such locations. Again they are easier and safer to install than traditional electric vent fans. It's also nice to have no electrical wiring up near the roof where potential water leaks can cause major problems.
Most designs consist of a square, rectangular, or circular solar panel mounted onto a fan housing (think of a rather squat mushroom). The solar panel directly powers the fan motor, which immediately works to draw air out of the attic and to keep air flowing through the house. This can greatly increase the efficiency of your heating and cooling system as well as decrease the amount of money you pay per month for electricity.
Prices for solar vent fans vary depending on size and application. For instance, a small solar fan to ventilate a boat cover might cost $30, while an attic-appropriate fan might cost up to $400. You might find them more expensive than traditional electric fans, but remember that energy savings over time will more than make up for high initial costs.
