Misting systems have a wide variety of home uses, from greenhouse watering to cooling patios to watering landscape and cooling pet runs. In the greenhouse, a misting system consists of pipes or tubes suspended from the rafters above the plants to be watered. Along the run of pipes are nozzles that release water at pre-programmed intervals.

A similar setup can be installed around the perimeter of a covered patio to cool friends and family off during long summer days of play, work, or tanning. Need to leave the dogs outside for a while? Keep them healthy and happy with a misting system complete with sensors to detect changes in temperature that give the misting system the intelligence to know when the day gets hot enough to the point that cooling is necessary.

Solar power enters the equation in two common ways.

  1. Automatic misting systems require a small motor to pump water and run the system. Especially on separate greenhouses, a solar panel can easily be installed by a professional solar contractor and will easily provide enough power to run the small motor, even enough to power electrical outlets, heaters, or lighting needs as well.
  1. Solar sensors are very common in misting systems. These sensors detect sunlight, temperature, and humidity changes so that the system can run efficiently without wasting electricity or water. For hot climates, they know when the sun goes down for night watering of plants. They are also used with solar drip systems embedded directly in the soil at the base of the plants.
