A little extra lighting is always useful on a deck or patio. Well-placed lights enhance both safety and style, as well as extend the usefulness of your deck long into the night. Solar-powered lights offer an especially sweet deal for darker patios since they require no wiring.

For low decks and most patios, common low-cost solar garden lights can work efficiently. These lights simply stake into the ground around the border. Solar garden lights run as cheap as $15 to $20. Other options include hanging traditional-looking solar lights, which suspend from a stand or long ornamental stake, much like an old oil lantern would have.

For decks, there is the option of solar deck and step lights. These are similar in design to solar LED pavers, which serve a similar function for patios, and can be installed pretty much anywhere on the deck you choose. They're most commonly installed along edges and up steps for safe climbing at night. They can also be installed along railings and even along the vertical edge of the deck or patio (preferably on a south-facing deck).

Solar pavers are much the same. They can be incorporated into a new patio or retrofitted into an older version. They are available in a number of sizes and shapes, including brick, and may be placed in concrete patios as well.

Solar deck and patio lights can be found from a number of retailers. That includes big boxes like Lowe's and Home Depot, as well as small or online sources, such as Maki Solar, Silicon Solar, Solar Home and others.
