Solar Flat Plate Air Collectors

In order to create a solar energy system, you need some method of collection. We learn as children the effects the sun’s rays through a magnifying glass, and collecting solar energy is not much different, just more complicated. There are three different types of collectors, but the one most commonly used for residential purposes is the flat-plate collector.

What is a flat-plate collector?

A flat-plate collector is a flat-metal box with a glass or plastic glazing over the top. This glazing traps heat within the box that is absorbed through a dark-colored metal absorption plate. This plate transfers heat to tubes in the box that either contains water or air. The air circulates through convection, warming as it passes around the absorber. The hot air is then transferred by a fan or blower to help warm the house.

Flat-plate collectors: liquid vs. air systems.

Flat-plate air collectors are simpler than liquid collectors and are used for space heating. Heat evaporates from air faster than liquid, making air collectors less efficient than the liquid models. Air collectors work fine for smaller applications, but probably aren’t the best for whole-house heating. You can have more than one collector within a home.

Even if you are not ready to invest in a complete photovoltaic paneled solar system for your house, you can still have some form of solar generated energy. Flat-plate collector systems as a method of heating are a great way to supplement your existing energy sources. Even if it isn’t capable of heating a whole house, it can at least bring some relief to your energy bills. Request the assistance of a prescreened solar installer in your area to discuss what options are available for you.
