Grand Canyon Goes Solar

The 4.5 million people passing through the Visitor Center at the Grand Canyon National Park this year will have more to learn about than ancient geological forces. Now, spectators to one of the world's most expansive natural wonders will also witness one of its most powerful energy sources.

84 photovoltaic solar panels mounted on platforms outside the park's south entrance are providing roughly 18 kilowatts of solar power, or about 30 percent of the center's power needs. An exhibit inside, as well as signs next to the platforms inform tourists about the power and potential of solar energy. A monitor is also posted showing how much electricity the solar array is producing in real-time.

The solar system stands as an example of Arizona's vast solar potential. "The Visitor Center is the perfect location, making the panels visible to all guests, providing an opportunity to educate and inspire," said Steve Martin, Grand Canyon National Park Superintendent. The system was funded by customers of APS, a major utility in Arizona. The collaboration between the Park and APS is a prime demonstration project in terms of education and outreach, as the Grand Canyon is not only one of the United States' largest, but also one of its most popular natural phenomenons.

These guys are very personable. I was given cell phone numbers for all the guys, so there was never a problem getting a hold of the right people. I rarely had to call anyone though, since they were very good about always keeping me up to date with the progress. It was truly a pleasure working with California Construction Center.
