Incredible New Solar Rebates in Michigan

DTE Energy has launched a new solar incentive program. The rebate consists of three parts:
- A $2.40-per-watt cash rebate just for installing the panels. That amounts to about $2,400 per kW installed, or $12,000 for 5kW. Either way, it's a sizable chunk to take right off the top.
- Next is a production incentive that functions much like a feed-in tariff. The rate is $0.11 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), which comes to approximately $110 for a 1-kW system, or $610 for 5kW when figured annually.
- And then toss in the Federal Tax Credit of 30 percent, shaving another $6,900 off a 5-kW system, or $1,380 for a 1-kW system.
Best of all, you may not be limited to a 1-kW system because a 5-kW version will only cost you down around $6,000. Pretty amazing! A nice move by DTE and cost-effective for the consumer. Watching residential solar power integrate into the grid via old-fashioned public utility companies is somewhat akin to that image of the whole world holding hands. Well, that might be a touch too heavy on utopia, but, if I lived in Michigan's thumb, I could definitely shake on this. Major cities served by DTE include Ann Arbor, Flint, Detroit and Livonia.
Wait, is it Too Cold to Go Solar in Detroit?
Absolutely not! Solar panels do not require the heat that solar thermal technologies do, and actually function better when cooler. They're made of silicon, so they're similar to computers; lower temperatures boost performance.
