Solar Power King Chair of Manufacturing Council
As the United States continues to lag behind in the renewable energy race, new hope is on the horizon. Bruce Sohn, President of First Solar, has recently been appointed chair of the U.S. Manufacturing Council.
So what does this mean for the manufacturing sector? That energy efficient technologies will soon be more readily available. In addition, it indicates that the current administration is committed to ensuring that the United States picks up the pace when it comes to making the switch to renewable energy sources.
And studies show that changes are absolutely necessary. 10 years ago, 40 percent of PV panels (solar photovoltaic modules) were made in the United States. Today, that number has dropped to below 10 percent.
Rhone Resch, President and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), hopes that new leadership on the council will lead to more successful tax incentive programs. For example, the Advanced Energy Manufacturing program doled out $2.3 billion in tax credits to manufacturers that used clean energy equipment, but ran out of money almost immediately.
Luckily, as president of the world’s largest manufacturer of PV, Sohn has a multitude of relevant experience to contribute. And that is one giant leap in the right direction.
