Utah Solar Rebates

Utah has a unique beauty, vastly different from other terrains throughout our country. Instead of lush greenery and abundant trees, it sports wide-open plains with awesome rock formations. It has a number of great ski locations and is home to the Great Salt Lake. Definitely a state full of surprises, what does Utah offer in the form of solar incentive programs?

Corporate Tax Credit

Renewable Energy Systems Tax Credit (Corporate). This incentive is offered to all sectors and allows for an individual tax credit for alternative energy systems, including solar. Residential applications are allowed a credit of 25%, with a limit of $2,000. Commercial applications are given $0.35/kWh for 4 years, with a maximum of $50,000.
Personal Tax Credit
Renewable Energy Systems Tax Credit (Personal). This is essentially the same program as the previous one, except there are different provisions that allow for other sectors to be eligible.
Sales Tax Exemption
Renewable Energy Sales Tax Exemption. This allows for any solar equipment purchased to be exempt from sales tax, reducing cost and making solar power a bit more affordable.

In addition to these incentives, various individual utility companies offer rebates and net metering programs to their customers. Utah also offers a net metering program, allowing those with alternative energy to earn a little credit that way.

In conclusion, Utah has a few incentives, but in actuality nothing very substantive. It definitely has a ways to go before it can be competitive with more progressive solar states.
