Arkansas is a coal-fired state, with just over half its electricity coming from coal power plants (31 percent from nuclear). With coal being so destructive, one would hope that Arkansas would be working to reduce that percentage, but the state has continued, without much hindrance, its attachment to fossil-fuel energy.
However, thanks to state funding provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) and the stipulation that federal money must be put toward renewable energy or energy efficiency, Arkansas is temporarily offering rebates for home solar power systems.
Renewable Technology Rebate Fund
Nearly $1.8 million of stimulus funding is available for this program. Residential photovoltaic (PV) systems up to 25 kW are eligible for a rebate equal to $1.50 per kilowatt-hour of solar electricity produced in the system's first year of operation. Rebate checks are mailed out quarterly when production is verified.
Solar water heating systems are also eligible for a rebate determined by collector area. Residential systems with less than 320 square feet of collector area receive $30 per sq. ft. with no maximum incentive specified.
